Target Audience basics for the modern marketing age

When we sit down to focus our business plan into specific goals, we are opening the way for real direction. Traditional business goals of the brick-and-mortar business focus on products only, banking on name brands to bring in the masses. However, modern marketing focuses instead on customer needs and wants.


It is more important than ever to know your customers, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is the age range of my ideal customer, marital status, or level of education?
  2. Where do they live?
  3. What are their interests?
  4. What do they like to do online?


If your answer is something like, “I have no idea,” or even “I don’t care as long as I have customers,” well, that’s where marketing comes in. Media and marketing agencies help business owners to understand their market. It’s often called a Target Audience.


When you enter into the modern marketing world, the first stop is Target Audience. It is common for a business to have more than one audience. When you are marketing to different audiences and comparing the success of those campaigns, you are beginning to learn your market and develop that deeper long-term strategy to promote business growth.


Peter Drucker, well known in marketing circles as the father of management thinking, once said, “The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself.” This line was then gilded and repeated throughout the blogosphere into a line he is now famous for.


And it rings true in the world of information tech, we have more information about customers like and dislikes now than ever before. We do not know names or faces. There is a layer of privacy and good business practice instituted into Meta and Google policy. But we certainly can market to the over 30s parent with a taste for fine dining or the 40s something males that follow hunting vloggers.


Will these Target Audiences be surprised you found them? Not in the least. It’s already being done, and done well. Reach and ye shall find all ye need and more… in the modern age to connect with the needs and often wants businesses are providing to their customers with digital advertising.
